at 18th and Castro Streets

San Francisco

18th and Castro, crossroads of the gay world! This picture was taken in 1979 at about the time the Castro had become world famous. A crowd this size was normal for a Sunday afternoon. 18th Street by the Elephant Walk was such a popular hangout by day and night that it was nicknamed "The Meet Rack" (and sometimes "The Meat Rack"). This is the bar that was trashed by San Francisco Police on the rampage after the White Night Riot later that year.
