C A S T R O    S C E N E    # 4 " T H E   C A S T R O   C L O N E " The Castro Clone evolved in the early 1970's as an unofficial dress code for the newly liberated gay men of San Francisco. It resulted from the desire to make a statement that the effeminate stereotype is not now and never was typical of gay men. The Castro Clone rejected the hippie look in favor of a macho style more like the Marlboro man. This is my friend Michael who I met very late one night in 1971 at Hamburger Mary's on Folsom, across from the old Stud Bar. We became good friends. He is one of many friends I lost to AIDS a decade later.
