Rick Jasany, this page's featured
photographer, worked in Harvey Milk and Scott Smith's Camera Shop on
Castro Street in the late 1970's. As a photographer, he used the name
Rick Jarrett.

The picture was taken in front of the
'NOTHING SPECIAL' bar on a sunny afternoon in May 1980. The bar which
opened in 1971 lived up to its name until it became the 'SPECIAL' in the
mid-80's. It was reasonably popular, drawing a regular crowd of hearty
drinkers, from 6 AM to 2 AM every day. It is now a restaurant. The
Special was on the sunny side of Castro Street as were the other
locations shown below in images from July 1977. They indicate how busy the sidewalks often were.
