ORDER OF DISPLACED OKIES
GAY PARADE 1978

ODO

The Order of Displaced Okies in the 1978 parade. I recently received the following e-mail from Henry Deaton, one of the people in the picture.

Hi Uncle Donald,

My boyfriend found your picture of the Order of Displaced Okies yesterday and emailed me the link. I'm surprised he recognized me, but he did know about the ODO's (as we called ourselves), and that's what caught his attention. I'm the guy with the long hair parted down the middle, holding one side of the banner. The other guy holding the banner was Michael Hair, who passed away sometime in the late 80's, I think. My mouth is open cause we were singing one of our ODO anthems, re-worded versions of songs like "San Francisco", and "Oklahoma". We all had Kazoo's too, and you can see the Kazoo in Michael's mouth. I still have a few of the ODO song sheets we carried and gave away during the parade, and my ODO t-shirt.

It was June, 1978, and I had finally moved to SF the week before from Tulsa, OK, after spending a couple of months here in the spring, and was having the time of my life.

Anyway, thanks for bringing back some memories, and for honoring the Order of Displaced Okies with a picture in your website.
