HARVEY MILK played an essential role in the story of the emergence of the gay community in the Castro District of the 1970s. He envisioned a path to equal human rights for gay people everywhere and dedicated himself to lead our community in the struggle to attain that goal. Harvey Milk was chosen by TIME Magazine as one of the 100 most influential politicians of the 20th century. Following is an index of the pages on which I attempt to tell the story of a friend of mine, the man who became "THE MAYOR OF CASTRO STREET", the first openly gay elected city official, and a martyr in the struggle for equality for all people. |
